School holidays are the perfect time to relax, have fun and gain new experiences. Whether you stay at home or are ready to go on adventures, there are many interesting and exciting things to do together. In this article, we will offer some suggestions on how to fill your vacation and where to go, so that it is both educational and fun.

Go into the nature

If you like to be outside and enjoy nature, the holidays are a great opportunity to go hiking, explore forests or just relax in nature. Latvian nature parks and protected areas offer beautiful trails and unexplored places where you can enjoy peace and quiet.

Gauja National Park – Possibility to go hiking, enjoy the landscape and visit popular objects, such as the Ķūķi waterfall, the surroundings of the city of Valmiera, the surroundings of Sigulda and Turaida and their caves. The length of the footpaths is more than 100 km long. Water tourist settlements are also available if you choose to go on a boat trip. There are more than 500 cultural and historical monuments in the Gauja National Park – mounds, stone castles, churches, manors, watermills and windmills. The Gauja National Park can be proud of the status of Latvia’s first and oldest national park, the park was founded on September 14, 1973 and is currently part of NATURA 2000.

Ķemeri National Park – Here you can walk through the swamps, visit the forests and learn about different species of flora and fauna. The best-known attraction is the Great Kemeru moor footbridge.
Cēsi Castle Park – This historical park offers not only beautiful landscapes, but also cultural and historical objects that are interesting to visit. We also definitely recommend visiting the Cēsis Medieval Castle. In the castle garden on weekends in the summer, everyone is given the opportunity to try various medieval games and pastimes together with the castle residents, learn ancient craft skills and explore the vegetables, fruits and spices growing in the medieval garden with the castle gardener.

Visit the museum and exhibition halls

Free time is a great opportunity to expand your knowledge and visit places that are both educational and interesting.

Latvian National Museum of Art – If you like art, this museum offers a wide collection of works of art and periodic exhibitions.
Latvian Nature Museum – Here you will be able to explore Latvian nature, animals, plants and minerals. It is especially interesting for students who want to learn more about the environment. There are a total of 13 different types of expositions available throughout the museum.
Latvian Occupation Museum – Get a deeper understanding of Latvia’s history and occupation period.

Include sports activities in to your day plan

If you like sports, the holidays are the perfect time to participate in various sports activities.

Surfing or paddling – You go to the sea and try surfing or paddling with a canoe or SUP board. There are many places in seaside towns that offer equipment rental and instruction.

Ice skating or skiing – If your vacation coincides with the winter season, you visit the ski slopes or ice rink to enjoy winter sports. Cross-country skiing can be practiced in the Blue Mountains of Ogre, as there are excellent trails and the possibility to rent equipment. However, if you are ready to spend a fun day together, skating to music, you can go to the Akropole shopping center or the Ogre ice hall.
Jumping on a trampoline or climbing a rock wall – If you want to get active and test your endurance and maybe even overcome your fear, visit one of the modern gyms that offer rock climbing, trampoline parks or other active entertainment. You can definitely go to JumSpace, which will be appreciated by every trampoline lover, but if you are ready to challenge yourself, you can definitely try your hand at Bouldering, i.e. rock climbing – SKY & MORE 2nd floor, Riga, Duntes iela 19a, hall Virsotne.

Participate in creative workshops or activities

Free time is the perfect time to try something new and creative. By participating in workshops, you can not only learn new skills, but also create something special.

Pottery Workshops – You visit a pottery workshop and create your own works of art out of clay. It’s a great way to express your creativity. “Virpulis” studio of the cloud of creative expression is one of those places.
Painting or drawing courses – If art is your passion, join a painting or drawing course to improve your skills. This is the opportunity to surprise each other and create joint art masterpieces that can be perfectly integrated into the home interior.
DIY workshops – Many places offer the opportunity to learn practical skills, such as small furniture making or handicrafts.

Explore new places in the city

If you plan to stay in the city during your vacation, there are many interesting places to explore. You may have never visited many of them!

Old Town of Riga – Go for a walk through the historical center of Riga and discover lesser-known streets and cafes. Also visit various historical objects, such as St. Peter’s Church or Riga Cathedral.
Jurmala – You go to Jurmala, where you can both walk along the beach and visit various spa and cultural events of the resort. Livu Aquapark is also located on the way to Jurmala in Lielupe.
Latvian Science and Technology Museum – There are also technology museums in Riga, where you can get acquainted with the development of technology and try out interactive exhibitions.
Parks in the vicinity of Riga – The parks in the vicinity of Riga can also surprise you. Victory Park has received a new transformation. Here you can have fun together in the summer riding a bike, roller skating or just walking. There is a small beach in the park. In the winter, rent cross-country skis or take your own and try your hand at the track, but choose our Green Garden & Paid Parking Apartments with Playground as a resting place where you can prepare a delicious meal. Maras pond park, a great place for a walk or feeding the ducks. Arcadia Park, mysteriously charming with its bridges. Riga is unique because there are many such wonderful parks to discover.

Help a charity

School holidays are also a great opportunity to help others. If you want to do a good deed, you can do some volunteer work or help charities. For example take the opportunity to go to one of the animal shelters and take one of the dogs there for a walk.
