Traditional Latvian Easter Customs

Latvian Easter customs are deeply rooted in both Christian beliefs and pre-Christian pagan rituals:

Palm Sunday:  On this day, people bless and distribute pussy willow branches, symbolizing new life. A unique tradition involves children playfully waking family members with ritualistic swats of these branches, accompanied by wishes of health and prosperity. There is a saying that is passed on from generation to generation : “ Round as a pussy willow bud, healthy as a radish, illness on the outside, health on the inside!”
Egg Painting: A cherished tradition involves coloring Easter eggs using natural dyes. Common methods include boiling eggs with onion skins for a reddish-brown hue, or using chamomile, red beets, blueberries, coffee, or turmeric for a spectrum of colors. It is common for the whole family to go into nature and look  for natural materials like flowers ,green leafs, moss etc. to be added to the egg coloring process. But the most fun of it all is to unwrap and see the different colored eggs in the end. This practice is both a creative activity and a way to connect with Latvian heritage.
Swinging: On Easter Monday, Latvians partake in the tradition of swinging. It’s believed that swinging on this day ensures protection from mosquitoes in the coming summer. This custom is often enjoyed in parks and open spaces, adding a playful spirit to the holiday.

Egg fight : We have to be honest, one of the favourite customs of Easter is egg fight, especially when it’s an allowed and awaited activity. Each participant picks the fighting egg from the beautifully colored, boiled egg batch. Now the rules of the fight : by playing rock , scissors, paper the first one who will hit the egg is determined. Each participant holds his egg in the hand, the winner of the rock, scissors, and paper starts the round. The losing person holds his egg in his hand while the winning person hits his egg with his , head to head first. The winner is the one whose egg does not crack in this process, however if both eggs crack , the same process happens with the bottom part of the egg. The winner is the surviving egg and the losing egg goes to the winner.
